Our efforts are inspired by the artist Lois Curtis, a Black woman with multiple disabilities who, after spending nearly twenty years in incarcerated and institutional settings, singlehandedly spearheaded efforts that led to the US Supreme Court’s passage of the Olmstead Decision in 1999. Regarded by many as the “Brown vs Board of Education” for the disability community, the Olmstead Decision affirms that people with disabilities have the right to live independently. However, Lois continued to experience institutionalization as a result of systemic racism within the disability community that created barriers to her accessing community based services and supports. It wasn’t until nearly ten years after Olmstead that she was able to create her own support network and move into her own apartment.

Topeka Habitat for Humanity https://kansassmallbizdirectory.com/city/topeka/listing/topeka-habitat-for-humanity-2/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 21:18:33 +0000 https://kansassmallbizdirectory.com/?post_type=listing&p=17513 Read more »]]> 21230759_1488842877842208_91515882205268At Topeka Habitat for Humanity they build because they believe that everyone should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. More than building homes, we build communities, we build hope, and we build the opportunity for families to help themselves.

Since 1984 they have built 113 houses and renovated or repaired hundreds more. Topeka Habitat for Humanity builds strong and stable neighborhoods by building strong and stable homes.

To break the cycle of poverty, low and medium income individuals and families need their income spent on housing that provides a decent, affordable place to thrive and build wealth through home ownership.

The Mission

To promote affordable housing for low-income individuals in Shawnee County.

The Vision

A community where everyone has a decent place to live.

Strength

A Topeka Habitat home provides a strong foundation for individuals and families—an opportunity on which they can build a better life. Families in need of a decent place to live build safe and affordable homes in partnership with Topeka Habitat for Humanity.

17498739_1324846890908475_56958249573990Stability

Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities. Topeka Habitat families are empowered to overcome the barriers that so often stand between their families and better, healthier, more financially stable lives.

Self-Reliance

With a little help, Topeka Habitat homeowners are able to achieve the strength and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves and their families. Research shows a direct correlation between housing quality and the well-being of children. Surveys of Topeka Habitat homeowners show improved grades, better financial health, and parents who are more sure they can meet their family’s needs.

Shelter

Decent shelter provides the solid foundation for all of this. It’s the platform on which a family lives out today’s realities and prepares for tomorrow’s transformations. Every Topeka Habitat house changes lives: those of the families who help build them and pay an affordable mortgage or loan and all those who offer them a hand up in a time of need.

We have always relied on community volunteers to educate about and promote solutions for peace and justice issues. Collaboration has always been a critical strategy to respond to problems. No one agency can take on the scope and depth of social issues by itself.

Picture

Topeka Center of Peace and Justice is currently working to bring restorative justice practices to elementary and middle schools in our area. We are working directly with the district attorney’s office to offer victim/offender mediation services to juveniles, Shawnee County and Court Services. Giving them the opportunity to learn from mistakes and hear from those who are affected by these mistakes. Providing an opportunity to move forward as part of the community rather than becoming repeat offenders. We work with the University of Kansas to offer Parent /Youth Facilitation in hopes of keeping families together by listening to the needs of the family and assisting them in communication.
